Getzin is entering his sixth season as head coach of Winona State University's women's basketball program, and the 2016 campaign was historic for the Warriors as they reached an NCAA Division II regional for the first time in the program's history. WSU scored 27-6 and 16-4 in its first season under Getzin, and won its second championship in a row. Getzins celebrated his 100th victory in Saturday's win over Winonna State, becoming the fastest coach in program history to reach that milestone. It was the first year in school history that they have gone at least 500 games without defeat, a feat that hasn't been accomplished since the 2010-11 season, according to the school's website.
In 12 seasons behind the Ole Miss bench, 59 volleyball players were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 15 were freshman Academic Honor Roll selections. The Warriors also performed well in class, winning the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 11th consecutive year.
Winona State won 21-8 (15-5 NSIC) with an unbeaten road record in the regular season and the team was ranked 22nd in the latest AVCA poll. The team also won 20 games on the road, a feat that hasn't been achieved since 1993, and finished 2014 in NSICS play to finish fifth in the conference. In 2014, the Warriors finished the season with a young squad that won the conference championship for the first time in school history without getting a vote in the AVCA's top 25.
Ariz. Getzin, who started the program from scratch at Embry-Riddle, led the team to the national NAIA rankings in only his second year. Getzin helped lead the Warriors to their first regular-season title in program history after completing his first season. Junior setter McKenna Larsen became Winona State's first all-time leader in assists per game and also earned the honorable mention recognition from the AVCA. With their leadership and leadership on the court and in the classroom, the Warriors continued to improve and reached the NSICS championship game. The Warriors recorded a 22-5 overall record, a feat never achieved in school history with a win-loss record in a conference championship game since 2003.
Getzin also oversaw a team that was highly successful in the classroom and was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2007 for being an outstanding recruiter and coach in the game. The team won the Chancellor's Cup 2006, which was awarded this year to the best high school volleyball coach in North America and the nation.
Getzin helped the Gamecocks in his first season as head coach when the program advanced to the NCAA tournament this year. The Warriors, who have been ranked in the AVCA's top 25 all year, were denied a chance to reach the NCAA tournament for the second straight year as Winona State just fell out of the regional bubble.
