He was loved by all who knew him as a funny companion and generous, gentle spirit. He was often seen on and off the field coaching Kekaha Hanapepe at Hilo, as well as his son - in - law, a former Hawaii State University football player and current coach of the University of Hawaii's men's team.
He returned to Kaua'i and worked for the Suisan Company before retiring to work in the Marriott's engineering department for a few years.
His interest in the guitar soon led him to become a member of several groups, including Spirit and Albert Hammond. He brought his musical career with him and developed a second career as a sound engineer during his breakfast work. In the mid-1960s he founded a surf band with Dennis Dragon and Drew Steel, which still enjoys cult status today.
Later, at the age of 10, he became a member of the first rock'n "roll band in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the museum.
